Greed is the result of accumulation through power, and because the ego is subtly aware that the conditions which brought about that power are fleeting, and could change at anytime, there is a continual move on the ego's part to increase it's power base, thereby delaying the inevitable. The ego also has a desire to accumulate as much of whatever it feels it needs, while it is in a position of power, and so both power and greed are the ego's way of ensuring that it will have enough to sustain itself far into the future. This logically makes sense to a degree, however, the ego severely abuses the whole concept and takes the idea to a whole new level we call "greed."
